Why is my swimming pool getting cold since last month?

The most likely reason is that the heating system does not have enough capacity to heat your house and the swimming pool at the same time.

We recommend you consider doing the following.

1. Ensure that the swimming pool filter pump is running for correct number of hours each day.

The swimming pool will only be heated when the swimming pool pump is running and will lose heat when its turned off.

2. What type of heating are you using to heat the pool water.

If you have a house boiler heating the pool water and your house, does it have the capacity to heat both at the same time. Also remember if its indoors, the Air Handling Unit (AHU) will also be adding to the load the boiler needs to heat. It is possible that the pool designer may have sized the boiler to heat the house during the day and the swimming pool at night, so the boiler and swimming pool filter pump must be on at the same time and during the night.

House boilers used for both house and pool

If you are using a domestic heating system to heat the pool, then there will be a heat exchanger that transfers heat from the boiler water system to the swimming pool water. These heat exchangers are designed to work at there most efficient at a water supply temperature of 82 deg C from the boiler, so check that your boiler is turned up to its maximum. Also does the heat exchanger have the capacity to heat the pool to the required temperature when all the loses are taken into account, such as lower outside air temperature for an outdoor swimming pool.

This also true for dedicated pool boilers like the Teledyne Laars, Jandy Lite, Genie and Certikin that heat the pool water directly when it passes through them. Therefore has the boiler been correctly sized for heating the pool in the winter?

Heat pumps, solar heating and electrical heating need to be sized correctly and must be able to overcome the heat loses that occur during December, January and February each year when they are at there maximum for the United Kingdom.

3. Cover the pool when it’s not being used

A normal swimming pool loses 70% of it’s heat from evaporation from the pool water, so covering the pool reduces this heat lost.
