Do you own a swimming pool in London?

Professional Swimming Pools has been helping swimming pool owners in London since 2002 to understand how simple it is to maintain a swimming pool if you develop your own system of maintaining the pool plant and using the correct swimming pool chemicals.

Professional swimming pools only use the best pool equipment and swimming pool chemicals available in the UK pool industry. For the last few years this has involved us using the Blue Horizon range of pool chemicals manufactured and supplied to us by Complete Pool Controls.

To support this range of pool chemicals and explain the BOAST system of maintaining your swimming pool, we have been supplying a FREE Pool Care Guide. This pool care guide explains the wide range of chemicals you can use to keep your swimming pool water clean and sparkling, free of debris and why your pool water will not turn green after a thunderstorm if you use the correct pool chemicals on a weekly basis. It also has a section that explains how to calculate the volume of water in your pool, the dangers each pool chemical presents to you and environment.

Welcome to the Extreme pool lining system. The tough, hard wearing PVC material is 1.5mm thick and re-inforced with an internal webbing. This gives it both the strength and durability to withstand the highest expectations of the most heavily used public pools, and the quality of finish to transform any domestic pool.

The adaptability of the system allows installation into any size or shape of pool. The textured non-slip surface, available in a choice of five colours, will make any steps a safe and attractive feature.

Continual development for over forty years ensures the maximum resistance to the ageing effect of the water treatment, sunlight and algae.

The material is brought to site and is cut and tailored to match the individual contours of your swimming pool. Panel by panel, the lining is made up and the over-lapped edges fused together using specialised hot-air welding equipment. Once thoroughly tested, the seams are then finished with a liquid PVC.

Secured around the perimeter of the pool floor, the materials is not bonded directly to the pool structure. This allows it to absorb any movement in a flexible or cracked shell making it the ideal and risk free choice for new pools or the refurbishment of old leaking concrete and tiled pools.

As a specialist pool company, Professional Swimming Pools gets daily enquires about leaks in domestic swimming pools from all over the United Kingdom. One such call was about a 25 year old swimming pool built by the original Penguin Swimming Pools from a client living in Essex, which suddenly started to lose 50 mm of water per day, which for a 15 by 4 metre pool is 3000 liters per day.

In this instance there is no need to do a BUCKET TEST as the water lost is greater than normal evaporation, so with dye and a pressure testing we found a broken return pipe. Unfortunately due to the type of pool construction used and the depth of the pipe work it was not possible to pin point the problem with the location equipment. Taking time and speaking to the client we was able to locate an area that has been damp for some time, so this is a good place to start our excavations.

All air handling units (AHU) need to be serviced on a regular basis to ensure they are operating at their best for the winter. The Calorex Delta range of AHU use belts to rotate the extract and supply fans for the air circulation inside the pool hall, normally using ducting and grilles to distribute the warm dry air to cold surfaces such as windows and doors . As you can see from the picture below, the belts wear and sometimes break causing the pool hall to become cold and even have condensation.

The worst time for condensation inside the swimming pool building is normally the months of December, January and February in Great Britain as these are the months with the coldest outside air temperature. Our swimming pool engineers receive the most call outs to air handling units (AHU) during these months and it is normal practice for our engineers to check inside the AHU during there normal maintenance visits and clean out air filters and replace belts.

The picture below shows the inside of an air handling units that we recently took over maintaining and we found that the external grilles were not fitted correctly allowing leaves to get inside the unit, the previous swimming pool company, who was the builder and maintainer never opened up the unit in the 3 years since it built the pool.

Swimming pools add value to any home, as well as, providing years of fun activities for every member of the family. However, there are responsibilities that come with owning a backyard pool. Children and pets must be protected from accidents involving the pool. The best way to provide protection is with a pool safety fence.

There is any number of fencing options, which homeowners can explore. The first consideration obviously is that it denies access to children and pets. The right fencing is critical for safety, as well as, appearances. Swimmers probably do not want to feel like they are enclosed or boxed off when enjoying the pool. Therefore, the fencing should not block any views from within. Subsequently, the reverse is also true; the view of the pool should not be obstructed by the fence.

Mesh fencing that is specifically designed as a pool safety fence is the ideal solution. The material is transparent, so no one’s view is blocked. The fencing is easily installed, and can be removed to provide access for pool repairs. One thing every owner must keep in mind though is that, safety fences are only as good as the gate that denies access.

The gate must be self-latching and self-closing; this is the only way to ensure the gate is always locked. Additionally, see through mesh fencing ensures parents have a clear view of the pool from every angle. The gate must be balanced so that it automatically closes from any position. Parents are encouraged to verify periodically that this feature works.

Pets, as well, as other animals that may find the water inviting would also be denied access with a self-latching gate. Most cities or municipalities have height requirements for safety fencing. The pool safety fence has to be high enough to prevent children from climbing over, by grabbing the fence railing. Mesh fencing prevents little fingers and feet from grabbing a hold. A minimum of five feet in height is the standard according to most city codes.

Insurance companies that provide homeowners insurance will require a fence, as well. Owners are encouraged to call their local code enforcement agency and insurance provider, for additional information.

It is incumbent upon parents to ensure their pool is safe, not only for their own children, but for all children in the neighborhood. The best protection against accidents is a pool safety fence.

Professional Swimming Pools (PSP) specialise on the equipment used on indoor swimming pools through out the UK from their base near Buckingham Palace in London.

With years of experience gained in the design, building, refurbishment and maintaining of swimming pools and their associated plant, it is possible that one of there consultants could recommend ways to reduce your running costs for your swimming pool.

As we approach the Christmas holidays, we start to enter the worst 3 months for condensation inside a swimming pool building, even inside your house if the Air Handling Unit (AHU) has not been balanced and has a positive air pressure. It is recommended that you have your AHU checked to ensure that they are working efficiently and they have the capacity to maintain the air temperature at the correct levels, which can be affected by blocked filters and condensing coils.

Fit a pool cover and you can reduce that air temperature when not being used, saving you £100′s each year and paying for the cover in a matter of years, specially with increasing fuel costs. It may be time to replace that old heating system to reduce the bills even further, so why not give us a call, send us an email or use the contact range to arrange a visit

You can use an indoor swimming pool every day of the year, without worrying what the weather is like outside.

Depending on the design, you could have problems with condensation and excessive heat in the pool building. When you build over a swimming pool, you are trapping the moisture that evaporates from the pool water surface. This evaporation can be reduced by covering the swimming pool with a pool cover when not being used and ensuring the air temperature is one degree celsius above the pool water temperature when uncovered.

We also control humidity with the use of Air Handling Units and dehumidifiers that remove moisture from the pool hall air. Please see article on How to control condensation inside the swimming pool building

Some of these Air Handling Units include cooling units that allow the air to be cooled in glass buildings that surfer from solar gain from direct sun light. These units can heat the pool water with the energy removed from the air, so they are very efficient to run.

London swimming pools are a subject of great interest due to the lack of land in Central London. Most swimming pools are built as indoor pools.

The majority of swimming pools that we work on are built under the house in the basement.

We also maintain swimming pools that are situated on the roof of properties. Even a swimming pool that is part of a Health Club housed on the sixth floor of the Old County Hall building in Westminster.

Some clients have even dug up their gardens and installed an indoor pool underground before reinstalling the garden above it.

One of my favourites has to be the swimming pool built under a fish pond. So when you look up at the ceiling you have fish swimming above you.

Why is my swimming pool not getting hot is a common problem we get asked to investigate as swimming pool consultants. We have compiled several articles on the different ways you can heat a swimming pool which includes solar energy, electrical heating systems, heat recovery systems to dedicated swimming pool boilers.

But why would a swimming pool not get hot? In all the above cases, the pool water is normally filtered and then passes through some form of heat exchanger to collect the heat from the heat source you are using. So it is important to initially check that the filtration system is working correctly, such as the filters are not blocked causing a lack of water flow.

Another common fault is that most heat exchangers are unable to take the full flow of pool water. It is normal practice to install a bypass using a ball valve. This ball valve can be adjusted to alter the correct amount of water to flow through the heat exchanger. If this ball valve is left fully open, then no water flows through the heat exchanger and the pool will not heat up.

These heat exchanges obtain their heat from burning gas in gas boilers, supplied from the house boilers LPHW system and electrical elements.

Some of the problems you could notice with these arrangements are:

The pilot light keeps going out, so the burners cannot light. A faulty pressure switch and even a scaled up heat exchanger. In the worst case, no gas or a broken/damaged gas pipe is unable to supply the quantity of gas needed.

If the pool does not have its own dedicated boiler to supply the LPHW, then it is normal practice to use the house boiler. The most common problem we have noticed here is that the boiler is unable to heat the pool and house at the same time.

The heat exchangers efficiency is affected by the supply water temperature from the boiler- ideally this should be 82 Deg C. This makes the surfaces of the house radiators untouchable, so the boiler output gets turned down and the pool water does not get heated. We also find that boilers are on timers, so the boiler does not run for long enough to heat the pool. In normal use, especially with indoor pool AHU, the boilers should be available on demand. This is either through the timer being on 24hrs or over-ride switches installed on the pool system to switch on the boiler.

Electrical heaters are like kettles and have several elements that heat the pool water , overtime these elements can fail so the heater is not giving 100% output.

These are a few of the reasons for your pool not getting hot, if you need more advice then give us a call today.

There are various ways to fill up a swimming pool to ensure the water is always at the correct level. There is also the possibility that the swimming pool will overfill as well, causing it to overflow.

We would always recommend that if a swimming pool has an automatic water make up system fitted, it should also have an overflow installed as well.

These automatic systems should be checked on a regular basis to ensure they switch off. We feel that the best time to do this is when you are backwashing the swimming pool sand filter.

Here is a list of ways a swimming pool can be topped up. Most of these are for skimmer type pools, but we do list a few used for level deck swimming pools as well.

Cistern ball valves.

We do use a ball valve that is used on most people’s toilets. These work on the basis of a ball or float fitted to the end of an arm. As the water rises, the arm pushes a rubber valve against the incoming water supply.

These can scale up and the rubber valve needs cleaning. We have also seen lots of these fitted at the incorrect level for the pool making it difficult to control the water level.

Ball valve in the skimmer.

Normally the ball valve is fitted into its own vessel in the pool side, or in the case of a level deck pool, in the balance tank.

One area we do not recommend its installation is inside the pool skimmer. We have started to see this more often and normally during a ‘call out’ to an overflowing pool. Inside the skimmer, the water level on some models drops when the pump is running and the ball valve never switches off and the pool overflows.

In one instance, we had to fit a timer to the pump and when the pump was running a solenoid valve turned off the water supply to the top up. The pool only filled when the pump was turned off and not running.

Solenoid valves.

This is an electrical valve that is fitted to a feed pipe and is normally closed when not in operation. When power is applied to the valve, normally 12 or 24 volts for a swimming pool installation, the solenoid valve opens by lifting a spring loaded rubber seal off its seating allowing water to pass. When the power is removed the valve is closed by the spring fitted to the seal.

This type of valve needs sensors fitted somewhere in the pool system and it is normal practice to have a high and low point to stop the solenoid valve operating all the time the pool is being used.

These valves open and close very rapidly and if the water supply to them is very high pressure a banging noise can be noticed and this can be passed through pipe work and keep people awake at night. This problem can be overcome by fitting a device that reduces the water pressure to the valve or fit a delay timer.

Rocker valve for balance tank.

This valve is normally used on a level deck swimming pool and is fitted inside the balance tank. The valve pivots around its centre and open and closes to let water into the tank which can be from a high pressure mains supply. One end of the valve is weighted and the other end has a chain that connects to a weighted float.

This allows the water in the tank to have a high and low point. When the water in the tank is at the correct level, the weight float is supported by the water and the chain is no longer tight and the weight at the other end of the valve closes it. The valve can then only open once the water in the tank drops by a considerable amount that the weight of the valve can pull the valve open.

Whatever system you have installed, the most important thing is to service equipment on a regular basis and test that the overflow is working.
