A domestic swimming pool will have fewer people using it, so the swimming pool has time to rest between users. This allows for the pool filtration to be much smaller and use less pipe work in providing the circulation, although pits used to store covers must be included in the filtration to stop dead spots happening.

For a commercial swimming pool with lots of users, deck level channels provide the quickest way to clean the direst part of the swimming pool, its pool water surface. The filters will be much bigger to allow for quick filtration rates and more pool fittings will be used to ensure water velocity is kept to standards needed to stop entrapment of bathers on suction grilles in the pool floor or pool sides.

Designing a pool is not easy, but the matter can be made worst when you need to refurbish an existing swimming pool. New swimming pools have higher filtration rates, so an old swimming pool will not be able to meet these standards. This is likely to lead to additional fittings in the pool shell and upgrading of the filtration system. Additional equipment such as Ozone and UV will allow for lower disinfectant levels in the swimming pool, which are needed on older swimming pools to protect the general public from unsafe swimming pool water.

If it is an indoor swimming pool, the design of the Air handling unit can reduce running costs. Bathers must feel comfortable when they get out of the pool, so good air circulation and heating is important.

We hope the weather will be nice for the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant, but it is still nice to sit in the open air inside a heated spa or hot tub. They are a good investment for those houses that do not have the space to have there own swimming pool. With insulated covers and ozone systems the water can be heated all year round with the minimum of running costs. They use less water and they are currently not covered by the water ban in the London area, and normally emptied every 3 months to clean the interior and remove the biofilm from the pipe work.

They do need maintenance, but his is kept to the minimum using cartridge filters, which on some of the newer models, the filters can be cleaned inside the dishwasher. Getting them into location is more difficult, in some instances they may need a crane to lift the units to the roof or into the back garden. But to most swimming pool engineers this is in a days work, so if you are thinking of installing a spa or hot tub, then give them a call.

Using special underwater tools the area with the damaged tiles can be prepared to allow for minimum of damage to the remaining pool tiles.

With the old tiles removed, using special adhesive and grout, the new repair will be difficult to detect.

We received a question this week that asked if pond water could be used to top up their swimming pool to help with the water shortage. But remember that ponds can support a lot of wild life in the garden including wild birds, frogs, fish, dragon fly’s and other water insects.  You also may need a license to remove the water from the lake if it is feed by a stream, especially if the lake is part of the stream and been dug to create a water feature. A real pond is really a hole that fills with rain water and therefore is a large water cistern, depending on it’s size, this water could be used to water gardens, fill swimming pools and help wild life during a dry hot summer.

So to answer the question, YES it is possible to use pond water to refill your swimming pool, but you need to respect the wild life and also worth contacting your water authority to make them aware of your plans, just in case someone sees you filling your swimming pool over the garden fence.

Why should you have an inspection carried out on a swimming pool before your purchase the house. Over the last few weeks we have visited several houses were the new owners have found that there new swimming pool is not working and in several cases are leaking.

As swimming pool consultants we can tell if a swimming pool has been maintained correctly during its life and how old the equipment and the pool are. We are also likely to notice things that most people would not observe and which may indicate that you have a more serious problems to deal with. Once you have purchased the property, you cannot get a reduction on the asking price to allow you to get these repairs done. So investing in a swimming pool inspection from our experience has saved many of our clients £1000′s in repairs, which they would have needed to pay out of their own pockets.

If you own a swimming pool in London, then from the 5th April you will not be able to top it up using a garden hose. But if the swimming pool is fitted with an automatic top up system which is plumbed into the water supply, then according to Spata’s website the following applies;

Swimming pool covers:  Swimming Pools with electric covers, that depend on water top-ups do come under the restrictions of the legislation. You are NOT permitted to top up a pool with a hosepipe even if it has an electric or any other kind of pool cover. You CAN however top up a pool using a handheld device filled with water from a tap and you CAN purchase water from a third party to top up a pool. Please note, that if a pool has an automatic water supply, legally the supply should be turned off.

But there is no reason why we should not plan for the future and look at ways to save water by use of storage tanks. This water can then be used to top up the swimming pool, ideally through a top up system connected to these storage tanks.

Safety covers fitted with rain water pumps can have the water collected on top of the cover pumped to your water butt in the garden. This water can then be used to top up the swimming pool or water the plants.

We have just removed an old Roldeck pool cover and replaced it with a new blue Covrex pool cover.

This picture shows the new cover slats being assembled on site. Each pool cover is measured for your individual pool and shipped to site. If your pool already has a pool cover, these slats will need removing from the pool before the new cover is delivered to site.

Some of you may be thinking that this is a serious problem, but normally the reason most pool complexes have a bad smell is due to lack of use. With an indoor swimming pool you are controlling the amount of moisture in the air, which causes the traps in the drains and shower wastes to dry out and allow the smells from the drains to enter the pool hall. So you need to use your pool more often and have a shower before and after swimming to ensure the traps are topped up.

Most swimming pool companies when they maintain the swimming pool will pour pool water down the wastes to keep them full and the chlorine helps to clean out and disinfect the drains. If you do not have the swimming pool maintained, then on a regular basis, take a bucket of swimming pool water and pour it down all the waste traps in the pool hall and plant room to keep them topped up.

If the smell continues, then we would recommend that the installation is checked by a pool engineer or pool consultant to ensure the problem is not due to a broken drain or poor pool design.
