Automatic pool cleaners

An automated pool cleaner is a vacuum cleaner made especially for swimming pools which are intended to collect debris and dirt with minimal human intervention.  Automatic pool cleaners do the most efficient job at cleaning with some even having the ability to scrub the bottom of the pool powered by a remote control.  They are now the most popular and convenient choice for pool owners on the market today due to their performance, durability and easy operation.  There are three types of automatic pool cleaners consisting of the automatic pressure-side cleaners, automatic suction-side cleaners and the robotic automatic pool cleaners;

Automatic pressure-side cleaners

A pressure-side pool cleaner runs by water pressure from the pump that drives the cleaner around the pool to collect any debris and is also the driving force that pushes the debris into a collecting bag.  Having a bag collecting debris that finds its way into your swimming pool is extremely practical as it doesn’t divert leaves and other debris into the filter or pump basket and therefore doesn’t compromise the filter system.  This water pressure can be created by either your main circulation pump or a separate dedicated pump.  A dedicated booster pump makes cleaning your pool a little easier and even lasts longer than using the main pump, but will need a dedicated line set up.  Pressure side cleaners are helpful in distributing clean, filtered water around the entire pool.  A pressure side cleaner does not have the ability to filter small particles through the bag and doesn’t always clean the walls of your swimming pool as well as some of the other automatic pool cleaners on the market.  They are however best when dealing with a big amount of larger debris, for example if your swimming pool is located underneath a tree.

Automatic Suction side cleaners

Automatic suction-side cleaners, as their name suggests, rely on suction to make them move around the pool and vacuum debris from the bottom.  They suck up debris straight into your filter and pump basket and so when the vacuum is underwater, it also sucks up a large quantity of water through the filtration system, resulting in a larger turnover of water in a shorter period of time.  Finer particles are also filtered out of the water more efficiently than if you were using an automatic pressure-side cleaner which requires a separate bag.  These types of cleaners are also better at cleaning the sides of your pool and this can cause a reduction in the amount of times you are required to brush the sides of your pool manually.  The installation of a suction-side cleaner is cheaper than the other forms of automatic pool cleaners as there is no need for further plumbing or pumps to be installed.  For a suction-side cleaner to work to its best, ensure your filter is kept clean and well maintained as the cleaner relies on your main pump to drive it around and vacuum up any debris.  Suction-side cleaners are the most popular type of automatic pool cleaner and are generally the most economical option while still offering all the basics to automate the cleaning of your pool.

Robotic Automatic Pool Cleaners

Robotic pool cleaners are the most efficient automatic pool cleaners, especially with regards to smaller debris, sand and silt.  Not only do robotic pool cleaners have the ability to scrub the sides of your swimming pool shell, but they also clean the tile line.  They operate using sensors located in the bump bars and on contact with walls, the machine pauses briefly, restarts and then heads off in another direction.  Robotic automatic pool cleaners are driven by electric motors inside the unit.  The electricity that serves as the power source for the cleaner comes from a transformer that is fitted into an outdoor outlet.  This is then transferred to a lower voltage and is then connected to the cleaner via a long cable.  Debris picked up by these cleaners are directed straight into the filter by a separate pump located in the cleaner itself.  Some robotic pool cleaners also come with a remote control that allows you to manoeuvre the cleaner to spots that may have been missed.  These types of cleaners also serve as a great way to circulate the water around your pool because of the powerful pump within the unit.  This type of pool cleaner will set you back a little more cost wise than the other types of cleaners on the market but are a great investment.

Keeping your swimming pool clean can seem like a daunting task at times and nobody wants to be spending more time cleaning their pool than they do enjoying it, so automatic pool cleaners can make maintenance a lot easier for the pool owner.  All three types of automatic pool cleaners will get the job done but when deciding which option is best for your pool a few factors have to be taken into consideration including expense, maintenance and performance.  Firstly look at what type of debris you have to remove from your swimming pool.  If pool is located near a lot of trees and leaves are a big problem, opting for a pressure side cleaner should suffice. However, if smaller debris is more of a problem then a pressure side cleaner is not the most practical.  Budget is another influencing factor in decision making with automated pool cleaners and if you can afford the best, robotic pool cleaners are well worth the investment.  If you require further assistance in deciding which automated pool cleaner is best for your swimming pool then please do not hesitate to contact PSP through our contacts page.  Please also view our testimonials page to see how our current customers feel about our services.

  1. It really depends on your swimming pool on what pool cleaner you get.

  2. With an automatic or robotic cleaning system you can set it on a timer, drop it in the pool.
