Filter pumps for outdoor swimming pools

Friday, January 7th, 2011

On a regular basis we are asked to recommend pool plant room equipment.  Our view on the best equipment is not normally based on the price of the plant, but on the number of years service it will give our client. We also take into consideration the prices of spares plus their availability,  and finally the ease of maintaining the item.

The reason we are writing this article is to highlight that having a pool next to a particular variety of tree could cause some pool filter pumps a problem and a nightmare for the pool engineer.

pine needles can block filter pumps

A good pool company when designing a pool needs to take into account the location of the pool,  the normal direction of the wind, ground water and the surrounding vegetation.  So when we were asked to refurbish a pool in The Bishops Avenue in Hampstead London, the location of a tree from the pine family looked like it was going to cause major problems when the needles fell into the pool.  A small amount of these needles would become saturated and sink to the bottom of the pool and then they passed through the pool sumps and entered the filter pump.  These could then pass through the baskets fitted to most modern pumps, and enter the impellor and block the pump.

Sta-Rite filter pump impellor casting

Most modern pumps are not designed to be dismantled on a regular basis and it is for this reason we have decided to install a make of pump manufactured by STA -RITE.  This pump can be opened and cleaned by the pool owner or engineer to ensure the impellor is kept clear.  This pump can be opened up by undoing a large metal band that holds the main body housing the impellor to the front end basket and made watertight by a large “O” ring.

These pumps are very reliable and can be purchased in all major horsepowers from a distribution network throughout the UK, and spares are available from these companies by overnight couriers.

So if you are considering changing the pump fitted to your outdoor pool, then consider STA-RITE.
