The amount of water in a swimming pool

The amount of water inside your pool or spa is important information, but it is likely that most of you will not be able to answer this question.  So why is this information so important?  From the most basic view point , this information would help you to decide on the amount of pool chemicals to be added to your pool to either decrease or increase the pH and chlorine levels.

From a more technical view point, you would be able to work out the turn around time for the pool.  The turn around time is the time it takes the filter pump to circulate all the pool water through the pool filter.

So how do you work out the amount of  water in your pool?

One cubic metre of water holds 1000 litres of water and each litre weighs 1kg, so a cubic metre weighs a 1000kg which is a metric tonne.

For ease of calculation we will assume the pool is rectangle and 3 metres wide by 9 metres long and is 1 metre deep at the shallow end and 2 metres at the deep end.  The average depth will be 1.5 metres = (2+1) /2.  The pool volume is 3 x 9 x 1.5 = 40.5 cubic metres, 40500 litres of water and also 40.5 tonnes of water.

Pool manual

We recommend once you have worked out this figure that you take the time to record this information in a manual, which should include details on the pool tiles, pool construction, make of pool filter pump and pool filter.

Our pool care guide which is free to UK customers, has more information on this subject .
